Coach Taylor had bright prospects for the season with three returning starters. The A’s opened with the school record of eleven wins until they lost at Mansfield. They had the best AHS regular season with an 18-1 record. Dick Messner repeated his first-team All-Ohio honor in the AP and INS polls. He established the career mark with 1114 points, and the four-year starter never fouled out of a game. Dave Burns, who scored 284 points, was named honorable mention on the AP team. Dick Cooper, who was called the defensive wizard for the second straight year, scored 166 points. Dick Johnson (149), Cliff Hurst (32), and Phil Lersch (45) filled out a line up that achieved the first 20-win season in AHS history. Kentucky’s Adolph Rupp was the banquet speaker to a crowd of 250 people in the high school cafeteria.
