New coach Sam Marchio from Urbana’s State tournament team had one returning letterman Bruce Smalley. The Arrows had a fast start winning 4 of the first 5 games by a basket or less, and then they could only find one more victory. Bruce Smalley led the team in scoring with 240 points. Mike Humrichouser (194 pts), Jim Bear (185 pts), and Dan Stark (180 pts) were first-year starters. It was the last year for McDowell Auditorium as the home court after 35 seasons, and it was the only the second losing season on the home court (1937-38). The Orange and Black won 245 games and lost 63 for a .795 record, and eight years they won every home game.
