The A’s were Coach Jim Barr’s most successful team Cardinal Conference and Sectional champs. They were one-point from the first Regional trip in 31-years, when Jack Purtell’s steal and lay-up at the buzzer was ruled out-of-bounds. (Not a cool call for Ashland!). The co-MVPs were Tom Marquette (307 pts) and Bruce Bille (305 pts), and they were both 1st team CC and NW District. Curt Cooper, a tri-captain, scored 237 points. Larry Coombs, the playmaker, had 122 points including 12 straight free throws in the Celina game. Jack Purtell, the only underclassman in the starting quintet, scored 219 points including 23-points against Sandusky. Bruce Bille had the first slam-dunk in AHS history during the 3rd game vs Dover.
